*premise of my version of their story:

he proposed in the past but she rejects due to getting her heart broken by him. he tries to win her back and hopes for reconciliation, much to his dismay she still holds that grudge against him. he gives up in the end with the thought that she had already moved on with someone else. she then starts to realize his sincerity and  remembers the past, but he already left…or did he?
